Using big data, artificial intelligence, and other technologies to provide accurate “measurement” for urban development and change is an effective means to help urban construction and development. On January 28, 2021, at the press conference of the people’s network studio facing the national network live broadcast, Baidu officially released the “growing city of the future – big data report of Xiong’an New District in 2020” (hereinafter referred to as the “report”). From the perspectives of ecological environment, infrastructure achievements, industrial development, population portrait, and network image, the report comprehensively uses data mining, natural language processing, computer vision, remote sensing satellite images, and other technologies to quantitatively analyze and interpret the development and changes of Xiong’an New Area in 2020, showing the latest appearance of Xiong’an New Area as the “city of the future” to the public.
Professor Dou Dejing, director of the Business Intelligence Laboratory of Baidu Research Institute, pointed out that 2020 is when Xiong’an new area will be officially transferred to large-scale construction. It is also the year that Xiong’an new area will go down in history. The use of big data and artificial intelligence technology can deeply explore the city’s internal changes and comprehensively depict the development status of Xiong’an new area.

In the report, Baidu uses satellite remote sensing image and image understanding technology to quantitatively analyze the ecological management of Xiong’an new area from the perspectives of vegetation cover change and wetland protection effect. In 2020, the greening transformation of Xiong county and Anxin county will achieve remarkable results. According to the whole region’s statistics by image processing algorithm, compared with 2019, the Xiong county urban area’s green vegetation coverage area increased by 16.40% in 2020. Anxin county metropolitan area increased by 9.15%. In the West and north of Rongcheng County, the green vegetation coverage increased significantly. In contrast, in the East, due to the large-scale construction of the Rongdong area, the number of vegetation decreased, and the overall green vegetation coverage of Rongcheng County remained relatively stable. Overall, the ecological environment of the three counties in Xiong’an new area has been significantly improved.
From 2019, Xiong’an new area will focus on constructing two functional ecological wetlands, namely, Fu River and Xiaoyi river. The estuarine wetland is the ecological barrier of Baiyangdian Lake, which forms the ecological buffer area of Baiyangdian Lake. The report points out that significant progress has been made in constructing two functional ecological wetlands at the estuary of Fuhe River and Xiaoyi river. Compared with 2017, the green vegetation coverage area of Xiaoyi River Estuary Wetland increased by 46.26%, and that of Fuhe River Estuary Wetland increased by 12.53%.
Xiong’an New District has been fully transferred to the stage of large-scale construction.
In 2020, Xiong’an new area fully entered the stage of large-scale construction. The report shows the achievements of infrastructure development of Xiong’an New Area in 2020 from multiple perspectives. Compared with 2019, the overall surface appearance of Xiong’an new area changed significantly in 2020. Among them, Rongdong, Mingang, Xiongdong, and start-up areas are the most obvious. Through the comprehensive analysis of satellite remote sensing images, it can be concluded that the radiation area of Xiong’an new area under construction in October 2020 increased by 89.52% compared with October 2019, and the construction scale expanded significantly.
The surface features of the Rongdong area, Xiong’an station hub area, Xiong’dong resettlement area, and other key construction areas have changed significantly. Through the analysis of satellite remote sensing image data, it can be concluded that the radiation area of the site under construction in the Rongdong area has increased by 57.75% compared with October 2019; the radiation area of the area under construction around Xiong’an high-speed railway station has grown by 69.48% compared with October 2019; the increase of the site under construction in Xiongdong resettlement area is pronounced. With the continuous advancement of construction projects in key areas, the Xiong’an New District’s urban cluster has taken shape, and the future urban landscape is very much expected.
The report presents the impact of transportation infrastructure construction on the geographical features of Xiong’an new area. Rongwu Expressway and Jingxiong expressway are clearly displayed in remote sensing images in the form of “vertical and horizontal from north to south,” and the trunk road network of Xiong’an new area has also presented a preliminary outline. Besides, the Jingxiong intercity railway has been completed. On December 27, Xiong’an station was officially put into use. The Beijing Xiong intercity railway was put into operation, which will further improve Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration’s high-speed railway network structure.
Simultaneously, the report focuses on the changes in road network density in Xiong’an new area. In October 2020, the Xiong’an trunk road network’s mileage increased by 7.25% compared with October 2019.
the industrial development of Xiong’an new area is accelerated
According to the report’s statistical analysis, the increase and decrease of POI in different types of Xiong’an new area further reflect the changing trend of industrial structure in Xiong’an new area. (Note: POI is a professional term, which is the abbreviation of point of interest in English and means point of interest. POI refers to a building or places with specific functions on the map, such as a hotel, a scenic spot, a school, etc. Compared with 2019, the number of various types of POI in Xiong’an new area will increase significantly in 2020. Among them, the number of medical and automobile service POI will increase by 30%, the number of food POI will increase by 24.7%, the number of shopping POI will increase by 13.7%, and the number of enterprise POI will increase by 7.41%. The rapid growth of the above classified POI can reflect that the influx of the construction army of Xiong’an new area has driven the development of local consumer demand and the improvement of consumption capacity.

With the orderly progress of new and continued projects in Xiong’an new area, the demographic characteristics of Xiong’an new area will continue to change in 2020. The report points out the monthly change of the total population (permanent population + floating population) in Xiong’an New Area in the past year. In addition to the cyclical and seasonal factors, with the influx of many builders, the total population of Xiong’an New District will increase significantly in 2020, reaching a peak in the first half of 2020 with a population growth rate of 30%. Under the negative influence of the epidemic and other adverse factors, Xiong’an new area has taken many measures to achieve “safe epidemic prevention and efficient production,” which enables the builders to fight in the front line healthily and safely and contribute to the construction of Xiong’an new area.
Also, the attraction of Xiong’an New District to young people is increasing. Taking the total population in October 2019 as the base, the permanent population of young people in Xiong’an in November 2020 increased by 37.35% compared with the same period in 2019. More and more young people come to Xiong’an to inject new youth power into him.

The report also points out that housing prices, planning, construction, and recruitment have focused on the public’s continuous attention to Xiong’an in the past two years. Compared with 2019, “business district” has entered the national popular search term for the first time. This shows that more and more people begin to pay attention to the central business activities in Xiong’an new area and consider the possibility of entering Xiong’an new area to carry out relevant business activities. The focus of local people’s attention in Xiong’an new area has also remained relatively stable. The keywords such as “relocation” and “planning” have been continuously concerned in the past two years. Besides, new hot words such as “epidemic situation” and “public resources” began to attract local people’s attention in Xiong’an new area, reflecting the unique characteristics of Xiong’an new area at the current construction stage.
